A Constant Companion

God sent Jesus into the world to be our Saviour, to free us from sin. But Jesus died not only so we could be forgiven for our sins (wrong doing) and have eternal life. That is only a small part of the total package.

Originally, when God made man, He made him in His own image1. God is a Spirit2, so he made man a spirit being with a soul and a body. Our spirit is the real life-giving part of us3 and through our spirit we can commune with God4. But when the first man sinned, man’s spirit was no longer able to have fellowship and communion with God. He didn’t die physically but he died spiritually. This spiritual death resulted in emotional misery and eventually physical death5.

Since then death, sin and separation from God have been passed down from generation to generation to every man and woman6. Through the first people’s act of disobedience, all men had become sinners7, slaves to sin8, under the wrath of God9, and in need of a saviour. Man could no more stop sinning than a leopard could change its spots10. He was powerless to save himself. However great his efforts, he could not remove his own sinfulness and pay the penalty for the sins he’d committed. A man had introduced sin into the world and only a man could remove it.

However, God had known beforehand what man would do, and had made provision for the problem of sin to be overcome so that all men could be saved11. God Himself would become a man12 and as a man, take away the sin of the world13. He would take the punishment for every sin that man had ever committed and ever would commit14, and make a way for him to have eternal life and a spirit-to-spirit relationship with God15. So God sent His son Jesus, who was both God16 and man17, to die for us on a cross. There, just as by one man’s disobedience sin had entered the world and all men had become sinners, by Jesus’ obedience, all sin was dealt with18 and many would become righteous19. This, however, is not an automatic process. God offers salvation to everyone20 as a free gift21 but will not force it on anyone who does not want it.

For those who decide to accept God’s offer, there are incredible benefits. When we are saved, we are spiritually reborn22, pass from death to life23 and our newborn spirit is eternally sealed so that it can never again be contaminated by sin24. We receive eternal life25 which is an intimate loving relationship with God Himself right here that goes right on into eternity. Jesus came not only to save us from sin but also to be our companion through life.

Although being saved is often assumed to be a onetime experience, it is in fact a process. When someone gets saved, they immediately become a totally new creation in their spirit, their spiritual salvation is complete. His faith, His joy and His power is present in their spirit and they are complete in Him26. However, it isn’t God’s will that we just be changed on the inside. He wants us to manifest this salvation in our physical lives. That takes place by renewing our mind27.

Man is a spirit, soul, and body28 and if we will change our thinking so that we believe what God says in His Word about who we are and what we have, then we will experience the life of God that has been placed in our spirits. If we fail to renew our minds, we can live our entire time on this earth without experiencing the abundant life that Jesus provided for us29.

Choosing to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour is the most important decision you’ll ever make! God’s Word promises “…if you confess the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses unto salvation.”30 “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”31

God has already done everything to provide salvation. Your part is simply to believe and receive.

Pray out loud

“Dear Jesus, please forgive me for the wrong things that I have done! I’m sorry, and I want to receive You into my heart. I confess that you are my Lord and Saviour. I believe in my heart that God raised You from the dead. By faith in your Word, I receive salvation now. Thank you for saving me!”

If you’ve said that prayer with sincerity and honesty, then the truth of God’s Word instantly comes to pass in your spirit. Jesus has come into your heart, because He’s promised to do so! He said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock, if anyone will open the door I will come in and have loving fellowship with them.”32. You are saved (born again) and completely new in your spirit33. This is the start of your new life! You’ve taken your first step into a wonderful new life of love that will never end – ever!

Now you should take some time to learn more about Jesus and what he can do for you!
